A record number of entrants took to the roads of the NSW south coast for the latest edition of the Johnny Warren Jamberoo Classic.
The annual charity ride has been hailed a resounding success and attracted 500 enthustiastic cyclists, who left from the southern Sydney suburb of Loftus for the 100km journey to the town of Jamberoo - the former home of the Socceroo legend.
An estimated $25,000 was raised for the Sydney Cancer Centre, the clinic where Johnny Warren was treated before his passing in November, 2004.
The course took in the rainforest surroundings of the Royal National Park before the plunge into Stanwell Park, and the roads through the suburbs of Wollongong.
The trek ended in the lush Jamberoo Valley before the traditional finish outside the historic Jamberoo pub which has been operated by the Warren family for several decades.
Former track world champion Sean Eadie farewelled the large contingent while Beijing Paralympic bronze medalist Jayme Paris, completed the personal challenge by riding from start to finish.
Many of the riders came from the nearby Illawarra and Shoalhavern regions of NSW, while some crossed the harbour from Sydney's northern suburbs to ride in Johnny's honour.
Although Johnny Warren had no direct links with cycling, he was attached to the event prior to his death when a small group rode from Sydney to Jamberoo to film a segment on the protocols of bunch riding for the Cycling Central program.
Riddled with various forms of cancer at the time, he was strong enough to welcome the event's "pioneers".
The moving gesture prompted organisers to name the ride in his honour, some three weeks after his death the following year.
